Pinstagram or Instarest?
I’ve been pondering recently about the merits of Pinterest and Instagram and I’ll put my hand up when I say that I actually think businesses would probably benefit from being on both and if I had to advise a client on choosing one only I’d probably not be able to give a clearly defined answer. Not right away anyway, not like I can with Facebook and Twitter.
Both are visual ways...

"Coming Soon, Less Clutter, More Stories" - Part 2
Last week, I gave you a rundown of the forthcoming changes to Facebook’s newsfeed, this week I’m going to explain what this will mean to Facebook Page owners.
Essentially the new newsfeed is going to be VERY visual:
Someone likes your page, your cover photo appears in their newsfeed - does it ‘say’ who you are? Your values? What you sell?
Someone interacts with a post...

"Coming Soon: Less Clutter, More Stories"
This is the banner (with button to try) you should be watching for over the next few weeks when you log into Facebook (in addition to a single timeline and Graph Search!)
Last week on 7th March, Facebook announced what is potentially the biggest change to their newsfeed yet. Big in terms of size and experience and big in terms of changes to the way you post and use your Facebook business...

From 140 characters to 100 words.
I’ve only been and gone and got published! That’s right you’ll find 2 entries by little ol’ moi in ‘100 Little Words on Parenthood’, a compilation of parenting gems, humour and advice put skillfully together by Charlie Plunkett.
What the heck has this got to do with social media I hear you asking. Well if it wasn’t for Twitter I would never have...

Bird Watching!
The ever constant changing world of Social Media means that each week there’s a new app, tool or platform coming out. It’s rare that I’ll jump immediately on the ‘bandwagon’ this being partly due to the volume of these tools/apps but mainly because I like to see how they work, if they’re of value to the SMEs I like to support and to read the various reviews...

My top 3 free tools of choice for the moment
I sat down the other week (rare moment as a mum of 2!) to collate all the apps and tools I’ve used in the last 9 months working as a Social Media Consultant. I counted 33 in total, quite staggering indeed and as I strive to assist SME’s, most without the big Social Media budgets of the big brands, they’re all FREE tools too!
Here’s my top 3 for the moment:

Recipe for Disaster (or why I love Twitter)
Picture this if you will, you have a recipe, not necessarily your all time favourite (you’d remember it right?) but tried and tested, easy, scrummy and one you want to make.
That was me last week except I couldn’t find the recipe. The first thing I did was to Google it hoping the fact that it was a Weightwatchers recipe would mean it would be easily located but no, it was not to...

What a year!
This time last year I was a mum of 2, working 1 day a week at aitch:creative, a fabulous local graphic design company and muttering to myself and the husband (when he listened) about needing to find a job that had child friendly hours.
Fast forward a month later and the husband ranting about my social media addiction and his passing comment about making money from it and the idea for Social Pip...

When #hashtags turn bad.
Ok, this is slightly old news but I’ve been working my socks off and only just got round to penning a (short) blog.
I’ve got 2 hashtag related stories that caught my eye. The first involves Susan Boyle and an ill thought out hashtag by her PR team. #susanalbumparty or Sus Anal Bum Party certainly got twitter buzzing and is still been tweeted about right now!
The 2nd story...

Pheed me more!
To be honest I’m pretty bored of continually blogging about Facebook and all it’s changes. Ok, perhaps bored is the wrong word to choose, I’m more infuriated that it’s detracting from me blogging about all the other wonderful social media loveliness that is out there so I refuse to mention it in this blog and my next one. Instead I am going to tell you about a new...

Thumbs Down to Facebook and what you can do....
Earlier this month I wrote about the reduction in Facebook’s reach and while I still stand by the engagement figure (talking about this) and organic rather than viral reach of each post being an indicator of your truly engaged community I’d like to share my current thoughts and findings with you.
Facebook determines, via its Edgerank algorithm, what will show up in someone’s...
I Love Social Media - warts and all!!
This is going to be brief and personal (2 things which my blogs often aren’t). As I’m sure you’ll realise I love social media and there have been 3 instances in the last few weeks, personal to me, which further highlight why.
Firstly, my 2 year old son has had a wart on his chin for about a year now. The Doctor has looked at it twice and decided, after I took toddler child in...

Facebook isn't 'reach'ing out anymore.
A couple of weeks ago I’d been watching the reach of each post on the Facebook page I manage drop and consequently the number of people ‘Talking About This’ fall quite significantly so when Mari Smith, someone who I consider to be a Facebook guru, posted this on their Facebook page I was both relieved (to know I wasn’t alone) and concerned:
Just what was Facebook...

10 Social Media tips for SMEs
Facebook now has more than 950 million people using the service in a given month, Twitter more than 500 million active users with two-thirds of the world’s top companies having an active Twitter profile, Pinterest over 955 million active users and let’s not forget other platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn and Google+.
More and more businesses are recognising the importance...

Who won the Social Media gold in the Olympics?
The 2012 Olympics have undoubtedly been the first truly digital Games. According to an article in The Sunday Games regarding data from Twitter:
There have been 4.4m mentions of Team GB in the past two weeks. Diver Tom Daley has gained more than 800,000 followers over the course of the event, taking him to 1.5m fans and putting him top of the Team GB Twitter leaderboard.
The Games have also...

Here's one I made earlier....
I love what I do. I enjoy managing the social media platforms for a local business, I love training businesses to understand social media and how it can work for them and I relish the challenge thrown at me when a business has a specific problem they need solving.
The latter happened recently. Little Possum Parties based near Letchworth has no website and uses their Facebook page to promote...

Knowing which numbers count!
I alluded to writing this entry in my Say No to Facebook’s Promoted Posts blog earlier in the month and something I heard the other day spurred me to action.
I was privy to a conversation about a business’ Facebook page which had recently run a Facebook advertisement. Now personally, I’m more about organic growth in terms of likers and followers and so as yet have resisted...

Now I don’t profess to be the font of Social Media knowledge or correct in anyway but I will NOT be paying to promote my posts on the Facebook page I manage on behalf of my client and here’s why…..
The idea of Facebook’s promoted post is to increase the reach of your pages’ content and engage more of your fan base BUT it fails to take into account the following:
If...

If I could change my Facebook status to 'In Love'...
I quite literally stumbled upon Pinvolve last week while browsing around some Facebook pages. Me being me, always keen to see what someone has that I haven’t (which must come from spending so much time around toddlers currently) I had to find out more.
Pinvolve is actually the offshoot of a forthcoming fashion catalog for the iPad called Bazaart. To quote the team
‘….we...

Don't get your 'Face' removed from Facebook.
If you are a business operating a Facebook page you need to be aware of the fact that Facebook can and will (and will do it without warning) close down your Facebook page if you do not adhere to their ‘Page Terms’
One important term, which I have to be honest was only bought to my attention recently, concerns the running of competitions. As a business you MUST NOT run any...

"Though she be but little, she is fierce"
So said William Shakespeare in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and I am certain that Shakespeare never imagined these words could be applied to the humble hashtag in Twitter! Having seen a recent tweet advising that the hashtag is not needed and is used more as a thought or aside I feel compelled to come to its defence.
Hashtags were actually created by Twitter users themselves at...

Inspired by Woman & Home!!
Ok, I don’t usually buy Woman & Home but my lovely friend Justina Perry from great local, Hitchin business, MamaBabyBliss was featured so I just had to buy a copy.
I took a rare moment to browse the magazine the other night and this caught my eye:
That’s me I thought - I tweet, I bake, I jot down ideas for this blog (ok not quite a novel), I am starting up (rather then running)...

Why it might be a good idea to meet some Twitter... →
After the recent #Hitchintweetup (after using the hashtag so much I have a complete inability to write this as 2 words- sorry!) this article caught my eye as it flashed through my tweetstream. I love Twitter, Facebook and all things social media but I also like human connection too and had often thought that I would like to meet some of my local tweet-mates. As social media researcher Barry...

First #Hitchintweetup (won't be the last)
How did it go? Well judging by the multitude of tweets this morning requesting another I would hazard a guess at and say ‘it went well’.
I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little worried it might be me and a free magnum of Prosecco (thank you Radcliffe Arms) but thankfully at one point there were 15 of us and a room filled with laughter.
@stansbie was the first to arrive...
